Arthritis Myths? Busted – On the Latest Episode of Live Yes! With Arthritis
On the latest episode of the Live Yes! With Arthritis Podcast, we debunk some of the most common medical misconceptions about arthritis with Andrew Laster, MD. Listen today.
In the age of information, people are inundated with the “new” and “trendy” and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. This is true when it comes to diet and self-care trends, it’s true when it comes to the news we consume, and it’s especially true when we learn new health information. As we face all the information out there, people who live with chronic illnesses like arthritis must be vigilant in separating fact from fiction not only for themselves but for those around them. I find myself smiling at the number of times I’ve taught someone, “Yes, kids really do get arthritis too!”
With all the misconceptions about arthritis out there, Rebecca and I wanted to chat with someone that could help us debunk the myths & understand the facts of arthritis. So, we invited Andrew Laster, MD, to join our latest episode of the Live Yes! With Arthritis podcast. Dr. Laster has been practicing rheumatology for nearly 35 years. He also teaches medicine at Duke University and the University of North Carolina – so he was the perfect guest to help us separate fact from fiction when it comes to arthritis.
Dr. Laster talked us through some popular arthritis myths, like “cracking your knuckles give you arthritis?” and “medications that are available over the counter have to be safe for everyone”. It was helpful to ask questions about these commonplace sayings and understand whether they are myth or fact with our guests.
Dr. Laster not only helped us declare some myths “busted”, but he also had us laughing and learning about ways that we can tackle medical misconceptions in our daily life. The most important thing that Dr. Laster reminded us was to be curious when we hear new information about arthritis. He encouraged us to talk with our physician about the questions we have and the medical information we have heard.
Just like Dr. Laster debunked our myth questions during the podcast, your doctor can help you the same way in the office setting. Remember, you have the power to bust medical myths and misconceptions by chatting with your doctor about what you’ve heard.
