Meet Dr. Guthrie: One of Our Newest Foundation-Sponsored Fellows!
UAB will be using their 3-year grant for three different fellowship students (one per year). Their first-year grant was awarded to Margaret M. Guthrie. Dr. Guthrie earned her undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. She worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of a summer fellowship program while in Memphis.
Dr. Guthrie earned her medical degree from UAB School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in Internal Medicine. During this time, he works as a research intern at UAB Division of Preventative Medicine and UAB Department of Microbiology.
Dr. Guthrie chose UAB Rheumatology because the department is ranked in the top 10 Rheumatology programs in the country. She sought a large program that would provide her with exposure to pathology and patient volume, and where she would work daily with expert clinicians and researchers. Her medical areas of interest include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), SLE nephritis (kidney disease), and health disparities. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our fellowship program is helping Dr. Guthrie as a first-year fellow in Rheumatology at UAB.
