Mary K. Crow, MD, is the recipient of 2022 Lee C. Howley Sr. Prize for her significant contributions to arthritis research.
The 2022 Lee C. Howley Sr. Prize Recipient
Mary K. Crow, MD, is physician-in-chief emeritus at Hospital for Special Surgery, professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and professor of immunology in its Graduate School of Medical Sciences. Dr. Crow is also senior scientist, co-director of the Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Research, and director of the autoimmunity and inflammation program at Hospital for Special Surgery’s Research Institute, where she holds the Benjamin M. Rosen chair in immunology and inflammation research.
Over the years, Dr. Crow’s research has focused on the induction and regulation of human autoimmune diseases. She continues to investigate the cellular and cytokine mediators of immune system activation and inflammation in those disorders. Her leadership roles have included president of the American College of Rheumatology, president of the Henry Kunkel Society, and she has been co-chair of the scientific advisory board of the Lupus Research Alliance.
In 2017 Dr. Crow was named an honorary member of the European League Against Rheumatism. In 2018, she received the Presidential Gold Medal of the American College of Rheumatology. In 2019, she was recognized as a “Notable Woman in Healthcare” by Crain’s New York Business.
We are honored to present the 2022 Howley Science Prize to Dr. Crow for her outstanding contributions to arthritis research and for everything she has done this year as an expert on the Arthritis Foundation Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee (MSAC), which she co-chairs. Dr. Crow led the Rheumatoid Arthritis MSAC Committee in 2021 and has been a reviewer for multiple years of our fellowship program applications, as well as of proposals for research initiatives and curriculum development programs in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Dr. Crow received a research fellowship from the Arthritis Foundation early on in her career and has given so much back. She is a new member of our national board of directors.

- Innovation: The study challenges existing paradigms and presents an innovative hypothesis and/or addresses a research gap, accelerates translational research, removes barriers and/or catalyzes the development of the field of arthritis and related diseases. The research develops or employs novel concepts, approaches, methods, tools and/or technologies.
